Congo Cobalt Mines
There is a frenzy taking place in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to mine as much cobalt as possible.
Cobalt is a rare, silvery metal used in the manufacturing of lithium-ion rechargeable batteries found in all cell phones, laptops, electric vehicles and thousands of other devices.
More than 70 percent of the world’s supply of cobalt is mined the Congo, much of it by peasants, including tens of thousands of children, who are paid $0.50 per day—if they survive. The conditions are toxic, brutal and lethal, and claim hundreds of lives per year.
This human rights and environmental catastrophe must end—and we need your help.
Imagine Foundation works with ground partners and government officials in the DRC’s cobalt mining provinces to:
- Transition children out of artisanal mining
- Support education of children through the payment of school fees
- Strengthen mining communities with tools for financial literacy, human rights awareness, and the development of alternate livelihoods
- Support initiatives to expand sanitation, electrification, and public health initiatives in the mining provinces
- Support conflict resolution between local communities and foreign mining companies
- Strengthen local governance and rule of law
- Conduct ongoing research into child labor, slavery, and environmental impact of cobalt mining
In the future, IF will also build and sustain a Safe Space shelter for women and girls to protect them from violence in mining communities.
